West York Boy’s Basketball Program

Team Guidelines

1) "Being On Time" (Junior High Rule - different than High School)

For practices, players should arrive between 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the practice and be ready to walk on the court and play (properly dressed, shoes tied, etc) at the official start time. If another team is practicing right before us, all players will remain quietly in the locker room with the door closed until the other team is finished. Players are asked NOT to arrive any earlier than 10 minutes early. If a player arrives after the official start time, that player owes: 1 line sprint for each minute he is late up to the first 5 minutes, and 1 line sprint for every 5 minutes after that.

EX: Practice begins at 3:25pm. "Johnny" shows up at 3:40pm He owes 5 for the first 5 minutes he was late, plus 2 more for the other 2-5 minute periods of lateness. 7 total line sprints.

NOTE: All line sprints must be run under 30 seconds to count AND all must be worked off before the next game, or else the player does not play.

2) Eligibility Guidelines WY Basketball players must adhere to the school’s eligibility policy outlined in the student handbook, with the following adjustments:

Level 1: Academic Probation = 1 game suspension, possible suspension from practice (coach’s discretion). .

Level 2: 1st Academic Ineligibility = 1 week suspension from all games, Saturday to Saturday, possible suspension from practice (with appropriate make-up conditioning to be determined by coaching staff)

Level 3: 2nd Academic Ineligibility = 1 week suspension, beginning immediately, Friday to Saturday, automatic suspension from practice for minimum of 2 days.

Level 4: 3rd Academic Ineligibility = Immediate dismissal from the team

Please note: if more than one class is being failed, the punishments move up one level for every class failed. EX: English 67% reported during week of Nov 24th = Level 1; if a second class, say Math 65%, was also reported the week of Nov. 24 , then this would = Level 2 repercussions (2 failures = 2 levels; )

In other words, failing multiple classes in one week does NOT equal a single instance of academic failure, according to our program.

Any practice time missed due to ineligibility will be excused AS LONG AS that time is spent being tutored or receiving remediation for the failed class. If not, the missed practice time is considered unexcused and will be treated accordingly, following the consequences outlined for tardiness.

3) Off the court behavior WY Basketball players are expected to carry themselves in an appropriate and conscientious manner AT ALL TIMES. Classroom behavior will be checked and ANY form of disrespect, defiance, or disruption will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and harshly by the appropriate coaching staffs. These punishments may also include temporary or indefinite suspensions, should the coaching staff deem it necessary. These punishments are in addition to any school-mandated punishments given for the incident. The following will apply to specific school-mandated punishments:

Detention: Detentions may NOT be re-scheduled to fit the team’s game or practice schedule. Accordingly, any practice time missed due to a scheduled detention will be considered unexcused and will be dealt with as tardiness.

In-school Suspension: A player may not practice or play on a day he has ISS. Any missed practice or game will be considered unexcused. A second incident of ISS will result in an automatic suspension from the team, with possible dismissal.

Out-of-school suspension: Automatic dismissal from the team.

Unexcused Tardiness to class OR school: Double the usual punishment for tardiness to a scheduled event.

Please remember that a student-athlete MUST be in school by 9:30a in order to participate in any activity that same day (on Friday, this includes weekend activities).

4) Bulldog Dress Code WY Basketball players will represent their school by dressing appropriately to any school event. This includes:

Away Games: All players will wear a dress shirt and tie, with dress pants or khakis and dress shoes (no sneakers or boots). During the school day, all ties must be worn appropriately, which means they are tied correctly and cinched tight. Your coach will determine when you may change into your game gear.

Home Games: All players will wear similar team gear: team shirts, shooting shirts, etc.

Practice: Every player will be given practice gear. You are expected to wear this gear for every practice OR a similar reversible BLUE and WHITE jersey. No other reversible colors are acceptable. Shirttails are to be tucked in at all times when you are on the practice floor. No jewelry, cellphones, or shorts below the knees are allowed.

Tattoos must be covered by either a t-shirt, arm band, or bandage during games.

5) Miscellaneous items WY Basketball players must realize that they are under constant scrutiny, due to the program’s long history of success and earned respect. Do not tarnish the fine reputation that those who came before you worked so hard to build up and maintain. This means staying out of web message board trash-talking, avoiding inappropriate behavior when you are a fan for WY instead of a player, and being courteous and polite to all spectators and fans, regardless of their loyalties or “un-sportsmanlike” behavior towards you.

You are a special breed of athlete… you are a BULLDOG Basketball Player. Make us proud! That is THE BULLDOG WAY.
